Существительное stuff (подобно thing) имеет очень широкий диапазон употреблений с общим значением "то, из чего что-либо состоит или сделано", переводы его зависят от сферы употребления и ситуации. Так, например: to do one's stuff делать своё дело/проявить свои способности; to know one's stuff знать своё дело. Compromises are the very stuff of politics. Политика заключается в компромиссах.
